WaltershowWalter was our 2nd Whippet. After having so much fun with Willie, we decided that it was time to add another Whippet. We didn’t know at this time that Whippets were like coat hangers and you just kept getting them…;) Walter and I were inseparable. He liked me more than Willie did so he was “My Dog”. Walter had his quirks like he hated certain people like men a certain height, or if they had bushy eyebrows. Walter was a character. He used to annoy my Grandmother so much she would get just furious with him. He was whip smart too; there was no fooling that dog, he got what he wanted, when he wanted it! My mom showed him to his bench championship and I got his LCM2. We traveled with both boys to many out of town meets, plus at least 3 trips back and forth to California. They LOVED running on the beach, and I remember how the sand smoothed out their foot pads. I hoped that Walter would grow old, but there was a tragic accident on the coursing field at the finish, Walter was T-boned and broke his neck. We rushed him to the U of M and tried surgery on his neck hoping the swelling would take away the paralysis. We waited 3 days, and he wasn’t improving. I remember driving to the U at 2 am to visit him; playing on the radio was “Cruel Summer” by “Banana Rama” and I thought how fitting that song was. I saw Walter, and his eyes were saying “It’s time to let me go”. The next day we made the decision to release him from his pain. He would have been 8 that fall. I still think of him every day, he was so special and will always be kept inside my heart.
